Outdoor Family Photographer

Natural moments, breathtaking locations, and memories that actually look like you — relaxed sessions across the North Coast and beyond.

outdoor family photographer, northern ireland

There's something different about a family photo taken outside. No one is standing ramrod straight under a studio light. No one is forcing a smile into a camera lens they've never seen before. Instead, there's a toddler chasing a wave at the beach, siblings tumbling through autumn leaves, and parents laughing — properly laughing — at something nobody planned. That's the magic of outdoor family photography, and it's what I live for.

My name is Eddy Calvin, and I'm an outdoor family photographer based in Northern Ireland — specifically in Ballymoney, County Antrim, right on the doorstep of the stunning Causeway Coast. Over the past 15+ years, I've had the privilege of photographing hundreds of families across NI, and not one session has looked the same. That's the beauty of taking photography outdoors — the landscape does half the work for us.

In this post, I'm going to walk you through everything you need to know about booking an outdoor family photography session in Northern Ireland — from the best locations and what to wear, to what a session actually feels like and how to book yours.

🏆 Award-Winning Family Photography in Northern Ireland

Named Best Family Photographer – Northern Ireland at both the 2024 Global Business Awards and 2025 UK Enterprise Awards.

Why Choose an Outdoor Family Photographer in Northern Ireland?

A lot of families come to me having had mixed experiences with photography before. Maybe the kids were restless in a studio, or the images felt stiff and formal — not quite like your family at all. The good news? That's exactly why outdoor sessions work so well.

When children are outside, they're in their element. They run, explore, roll down hills, and splash in puddles. They forget there's a camera nearby — and that's when the best images happen. As your photographer, my job is to follow the energy of your family and capture those real, fleeting moments before they're gone.

  • Children relax instantly outdoors
  • — movement, nature, and open space puts even the most camera-shy kids at easeNatural light is simply more beautiful
  • — soft, golden, flattering light that no studio flash can replicateNorthern Ireland's landscapes are world-class
  • — from the dramatic Causeway Coast to ancient forests and rolling countrysideNo two sessions look the same
  • — your location, season, and family create images that are entirely unique to youIt feels like a family walk
  • — not a chore. Most parents tell me it was one of the most enjoyable things they've done together.

"Every family has a story worth remembering. It's an honour to be invited into yours — even for just an hour — to capture the love, chaos, tenderness, and joy that make your family beautifully yours."

Best Outdoor Locations for Family Photography in Northern Ireland

One of the greatest advantages of being based on the North Coast is that I'm surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Whether you're drawn to dramatic coastlines, ancient woodland, or golden countryside, Northern Ireland has an outdoor photography location to match your family's vibe.

Here are some of my favourite spots for outdoor family sessions across NI:

🌊

White Rocks Beach, Portrush

Dramatic limestone cliffs, white sand, and the open Atlantic. Perfect for energetic kids who love the water. One of my absolute favourite spots.

🌲

Downhill Forest, Co. Londonderry

Ancient woodland with dappled light and earthy tones. Magical for autumn sessions, and beautiful year-round for natural family portraits.

🏖️

Portstewart Strand

Miles of golden beach, wide open skies, and golden hour light that is absolutely stunning. A classic NI backdrop families love.

🌿

Causeway Coast Countryside

Rolling green hills, stone walls, and wildflower hedgerows. Quintessentially Northern Irish and genuinely stunning in every season.

🏔️

Binevenagh Mountain, Co. Londonderry

Panoramic views over Lough Foyle and the Donegal hills. Dramatic and atmospheric — perfect for adventurous families.

🌸

Your Own Favourite Spot

Have a place that means something to your family? A local park, a favourite walk, your own garden? Let's shoot there. Location is personal.

Not sure which location is right for your family? Don't worry — that's part of what I help with when you get in touch. I'll ask a few questions about your family's style, the ages of your children, and what feel you're going for, and we'll pick the perfect spot together.

What to Expect from an Outdoor Family Photography Session

I know that for a lot of families — especially those with young children or teens who'd rather be anywhere else — the idea of a photoshoot can feel a little daunting. So let me walk you through exactly what a session with me looks like.

Before the Session

Once you book, I'll send you a welcome guide with everything you need to know — what to wear, how to prepare the kids, what to bring, and what to expect on the day. You'll also receive a personalised style guide to help you put together outfits that will look gorgeous in your chosen location.

On the Day

Sessions typically run for 60 to 90 minutes. We'll arrive at our chosen location and I'll ease everyone in gently — usually starting with a bit of a walk and some natural interaction, no posing required. I'll give you gentle guidance throughout, but the goal is always for things to feel natural. Kids are encouraged to play, run, and be themselves. Parents are encouraged to hug, laugh, and forget I'm there.

After the Session

Within a few weeks, you'll receive access to your own private online gallery, beautifully edited and ready to download. From there, I also offer stunning wall art and framed prints — because these images deserve to be on your walls, not just on a hard drive.

What to Wear for an Outdoor Family Photoshoot in Northern Ireland

This is one of the most common questions I get — and it's a great one, because what you wear really does make a difference to how your images feel.

  • Stick to earthy tones and soft neutrals
  • — creams, greens, warm browns, dusty blues and terracotta work beautifully against NI's landscapes
  • Coordinate, don't match
  • — matching outfits can feel dated. Instead, pick a colour palette and let everyone wear a variation of itDress for comfort and movement
  • — especially for little ones. If they can't run in it, leave it at homeAvoid large logos or busy patterns
  • — these distract the eye and date quickly in photosLayer up
  • — Northern Ireland weather is unpredictable, and layers photograph beautifully (and keep everyone warm!)
  • Wellies are always a good idea
  • — especially for beach or woodland sessions. Muddy boots and puddle-jumping make for brilliant images

Remember — I'll send you a full style guide when you book, so you'll have plenty of time to plan your outfits before the session.

The Best Time of Year & Day for Outdoor Family Photos in NI

The honest answer? Any time of year can produce stunning family images in Northern Ireland — it really depends on the mood and aesthetic you're going for.

Best Seasons

Spring (April–May) brings fresh greens, wildflowers, and soft light. Autumn (September–November) is arguably the most popular season — golden leaves, warm tones, and that gorgeous low afternoon light. Summer offers long evenings and the chance for golden hour sessions that stretch well into the evening. And winter? Crisp air, dramatic skies, and a cosy, moody atmosphere that looks stunning in print.

Best Time of Day

For outdoor sessions, golden hour is king. This is the hour before sunset, when the light turns warm and golden and everything looks like it's been lit by a professional lighting rig — because, well, it has. I'll always time our sessions to make the most of the available light.

What About the Weather?

Welcome to Northern Ireland! A little drizzle is part of the charm, and honestly, some of the most atmospheric family photos I've ever taken have been on overcast days — the light is soft, even, and flattering for everyone. I keep a close eye on the forecast in the days leading up to your session, and I'll always check in with you the day before. If the weather looks genuinely awful, we can reschedule with no hassle.

How much does an outdoor family photography session cost in Northern Ireland?

My session fees cover your time together with me and your fully edited online gallery. I also offer wall art and print packages for those who want to display their images at home. Head to my family photography page for full pricing details, or get in touch and I'll be happy to talk you through the options.

What if my children won't cooperate during the photoshoot?

The point of using dummy text for your paragraph is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters. making it look like readable English.

How long will a session last?

Most outdoor family sessions run for 60 to 90 minutes. This is usually the sweet spot — enough time to capture a real variety of moments and locations, without pushing young children past their limit. For larger extended family sessions, we may allow a little longer.

Can we bring our dog to the family photoshoot?

Absolutely — dogs are family too! The majority of my outdoor locations are dog-friendly, and four-legged family members always add something special to a session. Just let me know when you book and we'll factor it in.

How long until I receive my photos?

You can typically expect your fully edited gallery within 2–3 weeks of your session. I'll send you a link to your private online gallery where you can view, download, and share your images.

Do you travel across Northern Ireland for sessions?

Yes! While I'm based in Ballymoney on the North Coast, I regularly photograph families across County Antrim, County Londonderry, Belfast, and beyond. Travel fees may apply for locations more than 30 miles from Ballymoney — just ask when enquiring.

Ready to create something special together?

I’d love to photograph your family.
