How to Prepare Kids for a Family Photoshoot

Family photoshoots should feel relaxed, fun, and full of genuine connection — but if you’re a parent, you already know that kids don’t always follow the script. The good news? They don’t have to. With a little preparation (and the right photographer), your session can feel effortless and enjoyable for everyone.

Here’s how to set your children up for a brilliant experience.

1. Keep the build‑up light and positive

Kids feed off your energy. If you’re stressed, they’ll feel it. If you’re excited, they’ll feel that too.

Talk about the session like an adventure rather than a performance.

Instead of:

“Smile nicely for the camera.”

Try:

“We’re going to explore, play, and take some lovely photos together.”

2. Choose the right time of day

For younger children, timing is everything.

Avoid nap times, meal times, or the late‑afternoon crash.

If we’re shooting outdoors on the Causeway Coast, golden hour is beautiful — but we’ll always choose a time that works best for your family’s rhythm.

3. Bring snacks (the right kind)

Avoid messy foods like chocolate or crisps.

Great options include:

  • Grapes
  • Crackers
  • Mini rice cakes
  • Fruit pouches

Snacks keep energy up without leaving stains or sticky fingers.

4. Dress them in comfortable clothes

If kids feel restricted, itchy, or too “dressed up,” it shows.

Choose soft, breathable fabrics and avoid anything they’ll want to pull off after five minutes.

Neutral tones photograph beautifully against the landscapes of the North Coast.

5. Let them be themselves

The best family photos aren’t forced.

If your child wants to run, jump, explore, or hold your hand the entire time — perfect.

These are the moments that tell your family’s real story.

6. Don’t worry about perfection

Selecting the perfect spot isn’t just about beauty; it’s about what works for your family.

  • Consider Personality: Adventurous families may prefer forests or cliffs, while relaxed families might enjoy parks or beaches.
  • Think About Accessibility: If grandparents or toddlers are involved, choose locations with easy paths.
  • Time of Day: Sunrise and sunset provide the best natural light.
  • Seasonality: Spring blossoms, summer beaches, autumn leaves, and winter frost all offer unique moods.

7. Trust the process

I’ve photographed hundreds of families across Northern Ireland, and I promise:

There is no such thing as a “difficult” child.

Every personality brings something beautiful to a session.

  • Your only job is to show up and enjoy your family — I’ll take care of the rest.
